Cover changes the rules

A roofed porch keeps direct rain and UV off the fabric, so cushions stay looking new longer than they would in the open. It is the one outdoor space where lighter cushion colours are a reasonable bet.

Chairs that turn

Porches face the street, and swivel rockers let you turn toward whatever is happening without dragging furniture. Two chairs and a side table is the classic porch arrangement for a reason.

Leave the walkway

Keep a clear path to the front door. A pair of chairs against the rail usually works better than a set that pushes into the approach.

A front porch has two constraints a backyard does not. It is narrow, usually deeper than it is wide or the other way round with no margin, and it is public, so whatever you put there is part of how the house reads from the street.

Depth is the number that matters

Measure the depth from wall to railing, then subtract 36 inches for a walking path to the front door. Whatever is left is what you actually have. On a porch under 7 feet deep, two chairs with a side table between them works and a sofa does not, because a sofa needs its depth plus the path and there is rarely both. Do not forget the front door swing, which on most porches eats a corner you were counting on.

Covered does not mean protected

A roof stops vertical rain and nothing else. Wind-driven rain reaches most porches, and a covered porch that stays damp can be worse for furniture than an open patio that dries in the sun. Rust-resistant frames and fabric that sheds water still earn their place up here.

Chairs that do something

Porches are for sitting still, so a swivel rocker is worth more here than in most spaces. It lets one seat face the street, the door, or the person next to you without moving the furniture, which on a porch you cannot rearrange is genuinely useful.
